General introduction of the industry

In 2004, there were 78,500 private schools and institutions of different types in China. These schools collectively had over 17,690,000 students.  To break it down further, there were 228 private colleges, universities and adult schools, 1187 other institutions for higher education, 2,953 private high schools, 1,633 private middle vocational schools, 4,219 private junior high schools, 24 private vocational junior high schools, 6,047 private elementary schools, and 62,200 private preschools.

The percentage of private education that comprises the educational industry is constantly growing.  The greatest increase is in private preschools.  In 2004, the percentage of students attending private preschools among the nation was 27.9%, a 4% increase.  The second was private colleges and universities.  The amount of students attending private institutions of higher education has increased 1.36%.
